‘Betsy, Hampton ranked, Cloudland, HV receive votes in Week 1 poll

Two county teams started the season inside the AP Tennessee Prep Football rankings, while two more were just on the outside of the top 10.

Elizabethton was ranked fifth in the Class 4A poll despite a setback in the season opener at Science Hill. The Cyclones recorded 48 points, just four points behind No. 4 Haywood.


Greeneville held the top spot with 99 points, with Marshall County and Memphis East was second and third, respectively, in the poll.

In Class 2A, Hampton was sixth as the Bulldogs recorded 46 points – including a first-place vote. HHS dispatched Trinity Academy in the season opener. Michael Lunsford’s squad was one point behind the two schools who tied for fourth, Union City and Columbia Academy, and two points behind No. 3 Adamsville.

Happy Valley was just one point shy of cracking the top 10 as they recorded 20 points. HV pulled away for a win over Volunteer on Friday night.

Marion County was No. 1 in the poll.

In Class A, Cloudland received 15 points in the poll – six points behind No. 10 Lake County. The ‘Landers won a thriller over Class 3A Gatlinburg-Pittman on Friday night.

Dresden was the top-ranked team in the class with 82 points, while Greenback was ranked No. 2.

Other local teams in the poll included Science Hill (No. 6 in Class 6A), Daniel Boone (No. 9 in Class 5A) and Johnson County (No. 8 in Class 3A).
